Glen Canyon / Lake Powell

Lake Powell: It’s beautiful, it’s ugly; it’s big, but not as big as it once was; it’s an insult to the environment, it helps to support this country’s extravagant lifestyle. Lake Powell overflows with paradox.

Whatever your view of its merits or lack thereof, Lake Powell, photographically, is frequently underestimated and largely unappreciated.

Lake Powell is the central feature and the reason for the creation of Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. And yet, most of the park—87 percent—lies beyond the reach of the lake. Between the amazing lake and the astonishing slickrock landscape that cradles it, this park land is one of the most photogenic terrains on earth. —Gary Ladd
