Although the canyons of Arizona and Utah now dominate my photography, there was a time, twenty years ago and more, when my work days took me across much of western North America.

I’m still attracted to Yellowstone, Yosemite, Death Valley, Glacier, the San Juan Mountains, but I’m not known as a source for these landscapes and, indeed, my files on them have grown musty and shopworn. And I don’t really feel qualified to photograph them when I’ve visited their unique environments so infrequently.

The canyons have become my home, largely to the exclusion of many other magnificent landscapes. It’s a fair bargain, and I know that, maybe, some day, it will be renegotiated. — Gary Ladd
